I wanted to take today just to discuss style. I’ve been thinking a lot about personal style lately and hopefully I will be able to articulate all the things that have been running through my head.
The first thing is trends. Trends can be both a blessing and a curse. What I love is that they inspire me to try something new & step outside my box. What I can’t stand is when everyone feels the need to try a trend. Let me say – ALL TRENDS WILL NOT BE FLATTERING ON EVERYONE. If you do not feel confident and comfortable – move on! [times I haven’t even given the trend a chance: the bubble hem (don’t even get me started), feathers in my hair, PINK across my butt… you get the picture.] If you don’t like it, don’t wear it. (unless its a uniform…but we’re not going there)
Its important to remember that you don’t have to classify your style under a specific category. So what if you want to dress preppy one day and then completely 90’s grunge the next. That is your choice!
I think many people forget to dress for THEIR body type. We are all built differently and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. But there is something wrong about trying to force your body into uncomfortable and unflattering clothing. For example: I have very broad shoulders for my size & I continue to lift weights…making them even broader. Because of this I look like a 12 year old boy when I wear strapless dresses & swimsuits. (People never believe me when I say this – but it is TRUE).
Your style should be reflection of you. [A few things that aren’t a reflection of me: cap sleeves (my arms don’t even fit), booty shorts (no thank you), TOMS (I love the idea but not my style)]. You should feel comfortable and confident in your clothing. Clothes are there to enhance the wonderful person you already are & give you the opportunity to stand out (or blend in- your choice).
I used to dress to fit in with the crowd. I wore whatever was popular at the time and never gave much thought to whether I really liked it. It wasn’t until the middle of high school that I began to actively search for items I liked. Since then it’s been a (sometimes) unstylish journey, but in the past year or so I’ve found my style. And starting dressing for myself. (Don’t get me wrong – sometimes I still thrift really ugly things – then take them back to the same thrift shop after realizing my error.)
The point I want to make here it to DRESS FOR YOU. Because if you are confident everyone else will be able to see it.
Hopefully all my rambling made a little bit of sense. How would you define your style?
PS. A few of my personal favorite outfits (in the past few months)
