Ever since high school I have prided myself on being “real.” While real may have a different meaning to everyone, to me it has both physical and mental components. Physically, I am “real,” or natural. This is my natural hair, skin, nails, eyes, etc. Minus a brief stage in high school with padded bras and a summer with a pink streak of hair, what you see is what you get with me. (maybe one day I’ll share those photos haha). Mentally, I am true to myself. I don’t pretend to be something I’m not, I’m (very) aware of my flaws, and I generally choose not to associate with people that I don’t care for, mainly because I don’t want to force a smile and chat with them.
You’re probably wondering why this all matters…right?
Well, I have two teenage sisters. (Ages 15 and 17.) And as the older sister, I want to be a friend and a role model for them. I want them to know that they are beautiful just the way they are. That they don’t need to dye their hair, or lose weight for spring break, or spray tan just to go to prom. I want them to know its okay to not like people, and for people to not like you. That it’s better to do what you want and be true to yourself then force yourself to do something you don’t like. That its okay to make huge mistakes, and mess up, and cry.
I have found that real is the best thing for me. Do you consider yourself real?

Great post! I can tell from reading your blog that you’re “real.” I try to be as real as possible too, so I hope that comes across in mine.
I do dye my hair and wear make up, but that’s “me” and I don’t do anything too drastic that I look completely different.
In blogging, I just feel like I have to let my actual personality and style come through. It’s always so obvious when people are trying too hard to be something they’re not, right?

Something About That
You 100% come off as real 🙂 And I think your hair is awesome! I think with age it becomes more obvious when people try too hard
This is an amazing post. I do like to dye my hair and play around with different colors because it’s a fun way to express myself. But I don’t think people are mentally ready to be altering their appearance when they cry over a bad hair cut. I’m still working on the not hanging out with people I don’t like because sometimes they need a friendly face and someone to talk to and I try to be that person when I can even when they get on my nerves most of the time 🙂

I completely understand what you mean – and what I said definitely doesn’t apply to all situations, nor am I bashing anyone for dyeing their hair, etc. It was a generalization kind of thing. Sometimes people need that friendly face, so you’re helping!
I like to think I am real too (although I do like to highlight my hair sometimes…) I just don’t have the energy to be fake! And I love that you stay real too!

You’re right, its way too much energy! And highlights can be real 🙂
Real is gorgeous on you! I feel like we all go through phases of trying to cover up and hide but real feels so much better! I wear makeup and dress up because that’s how I feel real! And however a person can do that, good for them 🙂 xo
