In order to be transparent and hold myself accountable for everything I add to my closet this year, I will be sharing a closet recap at the end of each month. I mentioned this briefly on Instagram and some of you were interested in me sharing! Since 2020 is a year of Sustainable Swaps, I will dive more into shopping, style + sustainability next week, but today I want to share my closet/style goals for 2020:
I typed up a closet inventory and am tallying every time I wear an item this year. I want a better understanding of what I’m wearing and what I’m not! I was inspired by Paige (from Style this Life) to do this. So far so good with tracking; I’ve done this everyday this year. [I’m not tracking my pajamas/loungewear, so if I don’t actually get dressed during the weekend, I’m not tracking it haha] I know we all have at least a few pieces in our closet that we hold onto year after year but never actually wear. By tracking, I’m sure it will be blatantly obvious what I’m NOT wearing.
I am very guilty of having a pile of clothes on the chair or the floor, but I’ve made myself replace the habit this year. Now when I get home they either go directly into the hamper or back on a hanger in the closet. I want the clothes I do have to last, so taking better care of them is the way to go.
Again, I said no specific number goals, but to slowly but surely work at adding less and less. I’ve working to be more intentional with purchasing, and not let myself get caught up in the excitement of *new* that inevitably wears off.
I put items in my online cart only to close out the tab AT LEAST 10+ times in January. I keep reminding myself that I don’t NEED anything, and I should wear what I own. Not to mention, I have some trips planned both this year and next year that I’d much rather put my money toward. Experiences > Things. I will say it’s getting easier and easier to say no, so I’m hoping that by the end of the year my desire to shop will be low.
Two more gold-filled bracelets to add to my stack from Wear Talia.
Winter Running Tights from Athleta (had giftcard)
Polka dot top and Tulle midi skirt from H&M (had giftcard)
White Leather Sneaker from Shopbop (had giftcard)
Black Winter Parka from Old Navy
Graphic Tee + Pullover from Aerie (had rewards)
I bought more than expected this month but also had gift cards which 100% contributed to that. I wouldn’t have purchased anything from Aerie, Shopbop or H&M without the gift cards I had. Since I have been running outside consistently the winter tights were a non-negotiable, but the gift card thankfully offset the cost! Since this month was higher, my goal for February is going to be no more than 3 items. I’ll be checking in monthly throughout the year.
If you’re looking to curb your shopping, or be more intentional with your purchases, let me know! It’s great to have people holding you accountable.
Thanks for stopping by today! I’d love to hear more about your experiences with shopping less in the comments below.
xo, Maddy
