This denim jacket is one of the most loved + worn items in my closet. And we’re going to talk about it, but first…
Earlier this week I shared on Instagram stories about a company called Fashion Revolution. They are “a not-for-profit global movement with teams in over 100 countries around the world. Fashion Revolution campaigns for systemic reform of the fashion industry with a focus on the need for greater transparency in the fashion supply chain.”
They love fashion, but they don’t want it to come at the expense of the environment or other people.
Fashion Revolution was born out of the Rana Plaza collapse, when an eight story garment factory collapsed in Bangladesh, killing thousands. Tomorrow, April 24th, will be the seven year anniversary of the tragedy.
This week (Earth Week) is also Fashion Revolution week.
Throughout the week they have been sharing small daily actions that you can do.
Monday – Day 1 – Share your fashion love story
Tuesday – Day 2 – Read the fashion transparency index
Wednesday – Day 3 – Ask a Brand “What’s in my clothes?”
Thursday – Day 4 – Send an email to a brand
As I’ve shared on here numerous times, I am working to become a more conscious consumer and overall better human. What I’ve been slowly realizing is that I’ve changed, and therefore my platform has to change with me. Gone are the days of me scouring the Target clearance rack in college to buy things I don’t need. Because I now know better, I want to DO BETTER.
As I mentioned yesterday on Instagram, I have a LONG way to go and a lot of work to do. But hey, we’re all works in progress. Prepare for more content sharing this journey toward a more sustainable life (in all aspects). Also, if this is something that interests you (and I hope it does), I’d really love for you to join me!
Anyway, back to Fashion Revolution and sharing #lovedclotheslast.
I loved that it coincided with our Spring 10×10 challenge because one of the items I chose is the oldest item in my closet – my Gap cargo jacket (purchased in 2008). I actually dedicated an entire blog post to that jacket last year and you can read it here! The jacket is a staple in my wardrobe, so much so that it actually was one of my pieces in the Summer 10×10 challenge I did in 2018 as well.
Today though, the star of the show is the denim jacket, which is easily a top contender for most worn item in my closet. I haven’t had it as long as my cargo jacket (I think I purchased it in late 2017/early 2018) but it gets worn more frequently.
As I said, this denim jacket gets ALL the love, and it shows. It is now wonderfully broken in (although I’ve busted the elbows out twice) and the perfect top layer. Even with leggings and a t-shirt you’re slightly more pulled together, but not too warm. I wear my all year round. Found that lighter wash works well for me – majority of my denim is medium wash (with a few darker wash or black pairs).
Now, my denim jacket is not from a sustainable brand. It’s actually from Old Navy. But if you read my post from earlier this year, (My take on Style, Shopping + Sustainability), I’d rather keep and wear the clothes I already own than go out and replace them with the same item from a sustainable brand. Reducing consumption is KEY. Just like you can overeat healthy food and gain weight, over consuming sustainable fashion is still overconsumption.
If I were to purchase a denim jacket today, I would make a point to research and try options from sustainable brands first. But again, no one is perfect, and I don’t expect myself to ever shop 100% from sustainable brands. I still love and recommend this jacket even if it’s not sustainable. I just ask you purchase one and wear it for years 🙂
I feel like I bounced back and forth between topics here today so, a brief recap.
1) This denim jacket is wonderful and prepare to keep seeing me in it.
2) I’m working to become more sustainable in all aspects of life + expect to see that reflected here on the blog
3) Check out Fashion Revolution
Thanks for stopping by + supporting this space. Happy Thursday.
