hello hello. A little behind as its September 3rd but we’re here. Excited to talk about this month’s sustainability challenge…Secondhand September!
I got the idea from Fashion Revolution (follow them here) – a global movement for a fashion industry that values people + the environment over profits. The goal is to “opt out of buying new and embrace all things thrifted, borrowed, swapped and resold.”
Trading clothes/accessories with friends or family
Visiting your local resale shops
Refreshing an item you already own (like cutting jeans off into shorts, etc)
Looking for wishlist items on Poshmark or Mercari
Hitting up a garage or estate sale
Searching Facebook marketplace
Scouring The Real Real, The OutNet, Vestaire Collective (and more) for luxury resale!
Personally I love my local resale shops (I’ve spoken about them on the blog here!) and Poshmark. My cousin is the QUEEN of Poshmark (she finds the best items!) and since last year has inspired me to search there more. Some of my Poshmark wins in the past year?
This faux leather puffer for 1/3 of the original price + these Madewell jeans for under $35!
These Loeffler Randall Mules at more than 60% off
Neon Nike frees + a brand new pair of blue Nike frees (Nike stopped making my favorite style in 2018 so this is where I find them haha)
Other wins I’ve had in years past? Lululemon sports bras, polarized ray bans + faux leather pants. My recommendation for shopping online resale – be very specific with what you are looking for. The amount of items on Poshmark is insane, but once you have a clear picture of what you want and filter the results, it’s much easier. For example, I was on Poshmark yesterday looking for a specific pair of boots – the Sam Edelman Jennifer Combat boot (from last fall) – searching the exact name and brand, plus filtering to only my size greatly reduces the amount of results shown.
Truly, it’s worth looking at resale before buying most items (unless it is NEW to the brand.) Many brands make similar items year after year so your chances are decent of finding it lightly used!
I will admit though, there are 2-3 items I will be purchasing from the Athleta sale, but other than that I will be sticking with secondhand only if I do purchase. Anyone else down to join this challenge? Let me know! Have a great upcoming Labor Day weekend!
xo, Maddy
