oh hello there – excited to share with you a new series entitled “Advice from a Stylist” where each week I share advice, or tips, or teach you something that I’d share with my clients. My goal is to teach you how to create a funcitonal and versatile closet that you love!
In addition to this blog post, I’ll be posting a corresponding video on Instagram as well. You can join me here!
TAKE INVENTORY
Before you do ANYTHING. And I mean anything. Before you start a wishlist, before you start looking, before you buy a darn thing, you NEED to take inventory.
Question: If you do not know what is in your closet, how can you effectively add pieces?
Answer: You can’t.
You’ll just end up buying more things that don’t lead to outfits. And I’m willing to bet you already sometimes struggle to put outfits together.
First – take it all out. All of it. Set aside ample time to do this.
Second – try it on. Yep, all of it. Very rarely do we need to hang on to clothes that don’t fit us – unless they only need some tailoring (hint hint this will come up in the series soon)
Third – only put items back in that you like and that fit. Otherwise divide up into piles – you can donate items that don’t fit, swap with a friend or sibling, resell online or at a resale shop, or do textile recycling (H&M stores have a drop off area for this).
Then, once you have a better idea of what you’re working with, you can begin to see gaps or holes, start adding items to a wishlist, or seeing what needs to be replaced or updated.
