Welcome back to my new series – Advice from a Stylist. It’s me, Maddy, your virtual personal stylist and each week I’m sharing tips + tricks with you that I teach my actual clients so you can create a versatile and functional closet you love and actually want to wear. Its week 2 and I’m sharing questions to ask yourself before purchasing a new item! Let’s do it.
1.) Do I already own something like this?
If you do own something and wear it – is it worth adding a similar variation? If you do own something similar but don’t wear it – start there. Do you not wear it because of fit? of style? of fabric? Figure out the answer to that part. If you simply need to update the item – that could be a reason to buy!
Now, if you don’t own something like it but want to – this is a great place to be.
2.) Can I think of 3 items in my current closet to pair this with?
Unless you are starting completely from scratch on a wardrobe (which I’m doubting you are), you want to be able to immediately add this piece into your closet and make an outfit. We don’t want to have buy three new pieces to style the one top. If you can think of 3 ways to wear this item off the bat, it’s probably a good fit. Even if you can think of 2, that’s not bad. You can also buy it, bring it home and try it on with what’s in your wardrobe, then make a final decision.
3.) Am I excited to wear this?
Final question and still an important one. If you don’t love it in the dressing room, the chances of you choosing it out of your closet are low. When purchasing something new I want you to feel good in it and be excited to wear it. Why would we buy a dress we feel “meh” in? Why would we buy a skirt that “sort of” fits? Part of creating your closet is learning what you like, and how to find it. As well as learning not to buy out of impatience but rather find the right item.
These questions are a great place to start – I’m curious – do you have any process before you buy something – or is it simply, I like it, I want it?
