Welcome back to my new series – Advice from a Stylist. It’s me, Maddy, your virtual personal stylist and each week I’m sharing tips + tricks with you that I teach my actual clients so you can create a versatile and functional closet you love and actually want to wear. Its week 3 and today I want to share with you the #1 shopping mistake I see people make and why it leads to “having nothing to wear.”
You know exactly what I’m talking about – it’s a Tuesday, you have a dinner on Friday so you decide to go shop for an event. It’s 3 days before you have to attend a wedding, instead of wearing something you already own, you go out and panic shop for a dress. Don’t do this.
If you feel called out, good. You should. This is a surefire way to have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.
Don’t do this.
Because here’s what happens. You are probably going to spend more money than you want to. You’re going to be shopping based on convenience and not for something you really love. You’re probably going to compromise on fit, you might compromise on fabric and compromise on price. If you compromise, chances are that item is going to sit in your closet unworn after the event.
Instead of doing this, we always want to start with something in your closet – you can easily change the way you style the basics – like a great black dress, simple pair of jeans and a top, or a skirt and sweater.
