Good afternoon! I’m back again today with more Sustainable Swaps talk. If you’re unfamiliar with what I’m referencing – make sure to read this post and learn about the year long sustainability challenge that I’m working through with my friends Mel + Andrea.
The monthly challenges started in January, with the focus being swapping out single use water bottles, coffee cups and more. Since this is something I’ve already been doing, I found it almost second nature. But where I failed was with Chick-Fil-A. Admittedly it’s the only fast food I’ll eat, but I like their diet lemonade. I tried multiple times to go through the drive through and have them use my reusable cup at the window, but it was a total fail.
Again, striving for PROGRESS here, not perfection.
Then, in February, we added another focus – reusable bags! Swapping out plastic bags at the grocery store, Target, the mall, anywhere. I think a lot of people only associate reusable bags with the grocery store, but they can (and SHOULD) go everywhere. Also, if I’m only buying one or two items, I will simply ask to carry it out with my receipt. No one has had any issue with that yet!
And now, somehow we’re already into March, and this month’s focus is…
Yep, that’s right. There are plenty of ways to be less wasteful in the bathroom. The most obvious? Using less water. Think shorter showers, and turning off the faucet when you brush your teeth.
Instead of cotton balls, there are reusable cotton round pads you can use and wash.
There are reusable q-tips instead of disposable ones.
My worst one? Single use makeup wipes! I recently purchased the Makeup Eraser, which is essentially a reusable makeup removing washcloth.
Other ways to cut down on waste: recycled toilet paper (like this available at Target) ! A great way to waste less plastic is to purchase a soap dispenser and a massive refill bottle of soap. Save your money and the plastic on a constant stream of scented Bath and Body Works soap. It’s soap. Grab a huge container of hand soap (like this) and a cute dispenser (like this one) and you’re good.
I know this can seem like a lot, so pick a few things you want to change and start there. Maybe that means taking 5 minutes off your shower, or getting a shiny new soap dispenser, or ditching those single use makeup wipes. Whatever you decide, every little bit helps and we hope you’ll continue to join us on this journey!
As always, make sure to share your Sustainable Swaps on Instagram and tag me! I love to see it. Thanks for stopping by today.
