Why clarity matters in your closet

Hi and welcome back to Advice from a Stylist, I’m Maddy, your virtual personal stylist. And this is my weekly series where I give you tips and tricks and teach you what you need to know to create a versatile and functional closet that you actually love and wear, because that is our goal. Today I want to talk about something that is important in all aspects of life, but especially your closet, and that is….

CLARITY and knowing what you want, or at least what you like

I know in the first episode we talked about taking inventory because it’s hard to add effectively if you don’t know what’s already in there, but this is AFTER that. So now we need to be clear on what we actually LIKE before adding more to our closet. I see plenty of people shop and buy things they don’t like because:

• its trendy
• someone else wore it
• they think they need to wear it

We’re not doing that here. Your closet is YOURS, you don’t need to be dressed like anyone else if you don’t want to be. 

In order to get more clarity on what you like, here are questions to ask yourself:

• Do I like wearing brights colors or do I prefer neutrals?
• If I like colors, which ones do I like to wear?
• Do I prefer my tops more fitted or looser?
• Am I sweater person?
• Do I enjoy wearing jackets?
• Or prefer a cardigan?
• Do I like more structured pants and denim OR do I prefer them to be stretchier?
• Am I comfortable in skirts and dresses?
• Do I like wearing them?

I want you to be able to answer (at least) some of these questions before you start shopping so you are buying things that make sense for YOU, that you’re going to choose out of your closet.

If you love black cardigans, you probably don’t need to go buy a neon blazer right now. You’re probably not going to choose it out of your closet.

It makes sense for me, but it might not make sense for you.
