Hi and welcome back to Advice from a Stylist, I’m Maddy, your virtual personal stylist. And this is my weekly series where I give you tips and tricks and teach you what I teach my clients so you can create a versatile and functional closet that you actually love and wear, because that is our goal.
Today I’m actually going to show you a trick – and that is how to use a necklace and square scarf to create a halter top this summer! With the resurgence of the “going out top” (my millennial friends will understand), I’m in the camp of why buy one when I can make one?
You want to use a square scarf for this – I am using this one from Old Navy in the video but there are plenty of options out there at different price points – I will link some. For the necklace, it doesn’t need to be a choker, but definitely a shorter necklace for this. I am using this gold fill rope chain from Etsy.
You will start by taking two opposing ends of the scarf and tying a small knot. Your scarf should be a large triangle like this. From there you will thread the necklace through underneath your knot, then hook it on your neck. Now you should have the necklace on and the top of the (now) triangle shaped scarf at the bottom of your necklace. From there you will grab the two ends and tie behind you, as loosely or tightly as you are comfortable with. Then adjust! Make sure your necklace is comfy and secure, and you’ve situated your halter top in a good spot for you.
Because I know I’ll get asked, I would recommend wearing either a sticky bra or nipple covers, or one of those low back strapless bras. I usually wear a sticky bra, but I have a smaller chest and that’s my preference.
I used this trick to create a top for a concert last fall. I styled it with a pair of loose black trousers and platform sneakers and I love how it turned out. Here’s photos of that look.
Any questions? Leave them in the comments below! If you try it, tag me or message me, I want to see. Until then, I’ll see you next week.
