Hi and welcome back to Advice from a Stylist, I’m Maddy, your virtual personal stylist. And this is my weekly series where I give you tips and tricks and teach you what you need to know to create a versatile and functional closet that you actually love and wear, because that is our goal.
Today we’re going to dive into jewelry, so if you are a human who likes to wear gold jewelry, listen up.
We all know solid gold can get real pricey, but there are other options out there and I want to explain a little more about them, how they’re made, the differences and why I think gold fill is the best!
You’ve probably heard of gold fill, gold plated and gold vermeil when you’re shopping online – where they differ is the base medals and how much actual gold is in them. I have found that, generally, for pricing, they are relatively similar so this is why gold fill is the best bang for your buck and it matters.
So, gold vermeil is going to have a sterling silver base with a thin layer of gold on top – that mean if it gets scratched its going to show silver trough – the gold color will not stay, especially the more you wash your hands, or get it wet.
Gold plated is going to have a copper or brass base, with a thin layer of gold on top. So it won’t show as silver, but it will rub off and show that copper or brass base.
Why gold fill is great is because it LASTS!
It also has a brass or copper base, but it has a much thicker layer of gold on top so it can withstand more wear, water, sweat, etc and not lose it’s color! I have had bracelets, rings and earrings I have been wearing for YEARS – in the pool, at the gym, in the shower, etc.
When you are looking for gold jewelry, think gold fill – it will be the best bang for your buck!
